Dr. Kurt Walter-Hansen
In 1985, Dr. Walter-Hansen bought a little house that had been built way back in 1915. After considerable remodeling, he turned it into a functioning hospital, and Shamrock Animal Hospital was born. As the clinic grew and the many pets of Rosemount came to receive care, it wasn’t long before Kurt realized they were going to need a bigger facility! They moved into their new building in 1996, where the hospital still is today.
Dr. Hansen received both his Master’s in Animal Science and Economics and his DVM degree from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1981, he completed a clinical internship at Iowa State University before completing a one-year clinical residency in Field Services at the University of Minnesota in 1982. In 1990 and 1994, he completed advanced course work in orthopedic surgery at Ohio State University—this allows Dr. Hansen to better help pets hurt by trauma. He’s also one of a few practicing veterinarians in Minnesota certified to perform the advanced TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) and TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) surgeries. In addition, Dr. Walter-Hansen serves as an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine!
Outside of veterinary medicine, Kurt is a self-proclaimed “project magnet.” He often works on building construction and other challenging endeavors. He also enjoys traveling with his wife, working on his country farm with a menagerie of animals, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Dr. Patricia A. Walter
Like her husband and partner in ownership, Dr. Patricia Walter received her DVM degree from the Royal Danish Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen, Denmark. After graduating, she owned her own small-animal practice in Copenhagen while also working in the radiology department at the University. She was board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 1984 after completing a clinical residency and a Master’s degree in radiology at the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She was even a faculty member at the University from 1985-2003, during which time Shamrock Animal Hospital was founded!
Patricia has a special interest in abdominal ultrasonography and pulmonary radiography, and has contributed many scientific articles and textbook chapters to veterinary literature. Currently, she owns Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, Inc., which provides continuing education, telemedicine, and referral ultrasound services to other veterinary practices.
Dr. Walter lives with her husband on a farmstead in Rosemount, where they share their lives with three rowdy terriers, three mischievous cats, and three comfortably retired horses. When time allows, Patricia enjoys traveling with her husband, gardening, searching for antiques, and spending time with her two energetic granddaughters.
Dr. Mary Matzek
Dr. Matzek graduated from the University of Minnesota-College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Veterinary medicine is a second career for her following a degree in Anthropology from Emory University in 1993.
In 1997 she left a successful career working as an Account Executive for a New York based publishing firm to pursue a deep desire to help establish health care and preserve the bond between pets and their owners.
Special interests include specialized veterinary dentistry, feline specific medicine, and canine/feline internal medicine and behavior.
Dr. Matzek grew up spending time between the Carolinas, Georgia and Northern Illinois. Currently she lives locally in Hastings, MN with her husband Mark and their twin sons, Owen & William.
Additional family members include three cats and one dog. Cats include Biddy Kitty (7/2000), Miss ZuZu Bee (10/2005) and Meep-a-Cheep (10/2005) all of which were rescue or orphaned kittens. After being without a dog for 2 years, Gabby, a 4-year-old old lab mix was adopted in April 2014. The cats and humans were thrilled!
Dr. Matzek’s hobbies include oil painting, gardening and yoga. Yoga especially helps with many large dog physical examinations!
Dr. Erin Flath
After receiving her Bachelors in Biology from the College of St. Scholastica, Dr. Erin Flath went on to receive a Masters in Animal Reproduction Physiology from North Dakota State University. After that, she went on to pursue her life-long dream of becoming a veterinarian and graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014.
Dr. Flath was excited to join the small animal team at Shamrock Animal Hospital, after a year and a half of being a solo small animal doctor at a mixed animal practice.
Dr. Erin and her husband, Corey, live right here in Rosemount with their 3 Great Danes and 2 cats. Dr. Erin’s hobbies include archery, knitting, board games, reading and relaxing at home with her dogs and husband.
